Story by race director, Jim Woolfitt

A record 248 runners, representing 13 states* and representing 26 of West Virginia's 55 counties**, went the distance on Sunday, January 9, in the sixth annual Run to Read Half Marathon. The previous record of 186 finishers was set last year while 87 runners completed the race in its first year, 2006.

Although temps were in the twenties, it was a sunny afternoon. The new start time of 2pm allowed the sun & salt to work on any lingering snow after the course had been plowed.

The Marion County Parks and Recreation Commission (MCPARC) deserves much credit for the course being in good shape. The MCPARC maintenance crew plowed and salted the course on Friday & then on Sunday morning beginning at 7am. MCPARC donated 3000 lbs of salt which was dumped on the course. MCPARC also helped in other ways with the race.

We had first time winners on both the ladies' and the men’s side this year. Laura Mason, a high school soccer player from Buckhannon, WV, won in a time of 1:31:20.7, followed by Sarah Levine who ran a 1:33:16.6. Third place was taken by Clara Rhodes, also from Buckhannon, in a time of 1:37:30.7.

On the men's side, Dave Burnham of Arlington, VA, won in a time of 1:13:46.4. We understand Burnham recently married 2nd place finisher Sarah Levine. Fairmont Senior High School’s Dayton McVicker finished 2nd in 1:17:37.2. McVicker set the West Virginia high school record for the 3200 last spring in a time of 9:14.23.

Todd Edgell, who ran cross country with McVicker at Fairmont Senior last fall, finished 8th overall in a time of 1:22:31.7. Another high school cross country runner, Doddridge County High School’s Caleb Moore finished 4th overall, running a 1:21:00.5. Moore finished behind Jordan Chang of Winchester, VA, who ran a time of 1:19:28.4 enroute to 3rd place honors.

A big thanks to our sponsors, MCPARC and to our local Pepsi distributor.

We also thank all those who registered. We promise next year to do better with the water stops/turnarounds and to have pictures next year!
