The race begins with sun at their backs

Cameron, West Virginia, is the home of the Annual Cameron Beefalo Roast. So, what else do you do at a Beefalo Roast other than eat Buffalo meat? Why, of course, you have a 5K run! The proceeds went to help support the Cameron High School Cross-Country team, so any excuse for a run is more than acceptable.

The race began on a beautiful evening, at 6:00PM, as the sun headed for the horizon. The course sent the racers all around the town of Cameron and included a few small hills on mostly flat terrain.

It did not take long for Ed Tullius, the pre-race favorite, to take up the lead position. He never looked back and claimed the finish line first with a time of 17:37, a full minute ahead of the rest of the race.

The race for second quickly became a battle between Mitch Radella and David Regoli. After the one mile point, Radella and Regoli had gained an advantage on the rest of the field. The racers stayed together through the second mile, and it was not until the final mile that Radella was slowly able to distance himself from Regoli. Redella took second in a time of 18:38 while Regoli crossed the line for third in 18:49.

The race to be the fastest female for the day took just a little longer to be decided. Alena Harris, who had to come from behind after a fast start by the other ladies, was in control by the first mile mark. She spent the rest of the race stretching her lead to finish almost two minutes ahead of second in a time of 22:43.

The race for second had Stephanie Nolte in position after the first mile. However, Deloris Thompson was able to close on her lead and eventually move into second over the course of the second mile. Thompson took this lead to the finish, with a time of 24:44, while Nolte settled for third in a time of 25:06.

The evening wasn't complete without the crowning of the Beefalo Champion. This honor was appropriately bestowed upon the fastest man who weighed in at a minimun of 200 lbs. This year's award was taken by Jamie Cline (21:59) who was eventually able to pull away from Randy Nolte (22:36), his closest challenger.
