A fine fall day on the trails at ACE
The rain fell all night long, but it all let up just in time for the Revenge at Rocklick. Sure the trails had their fair share of mud, but the folks at ACE Adventure Center do a tremendous job of maintaining some sweet singletrack. Oh, and they also sure know how to treat a racer.

Your entry fee not only gets you the standard (not always so standard at bike races these days) t-shirt, fruit, and energy drinks, but how about a bag full of cool swag, post race tacos and burritos, random prizes, and a nice fat (as in phat) awards table! The only thing missing was maybe a few more riders to take advantage of some great late season racing.

When it got down to racing it was Jonathan Martin, Shawn Altizer, and Chris Phillips off the front in a bid for the expert title. The trio stayed together through the first lap, but lap number two had Phillips dropping off the pace.

Off and racing
Through lap two Martin was content to let Altizer set the pace. But when they hit lap three, Martin launched a fierce attack. It was enough to put a large gap on Altizer and it would hold until the finish. Martin took the Men's Senior 19-29 crown with a time of 2:35:04 with Altizer following at 2:36:18.

Phillips would be the next expert in at 3:05:02 and took home first Expert Junior honors. Michael Miller finished a long day at 4:36:57 to grab the Expert Men's Masters 40+ title. Some folks questioned his thinking as he road off for his final lap, but the smiles at the finish reassured everyone that he know what he was doing.

In the two-lap crowd, it was Dominic LaRoche distancing himself from the crowd on his way to a 2:02:17 and the Men's Senior 19-29 Sport title. In a closer battle, Terrence Worthington (2:23:52) beat out William Sabel (2:26:50) for the top podium spot in Sport Men's Masters 40+.

2002 NORBA WV State Women's Sport Champion
For the women it was Heather Bury (3:12:01) taking on two laps in Women's Sport to birng home the State Championship crown. The accomplished runner experienced the beauty of bonking near the end of the second lap. A great learning experience for anyone a little new to the mountain bike racing scene.

And how about those beginners? Alex Purlini romped through one lap in a time of 1:12:27 for a victory while Traci Levine took a win for the ladies at 1:47:40.

Congratulations to all that participated and after such great treatment from the folks at ACE, you can bet they'll be back again in 2003. Hope to see you there, as well!
