Series Finishes Strong

Cupid brought sunshine and fast times to the flat Winter Series #3 Run/Walk course, capping off the three-event series with a 10K run and a 5K walk down the tree lined streets of Kanawha City.

The weather on this day was in stark contrast to the icy conditions of the event #2. The stage was set for a swift race.

The walkers took to the road for their longest test of the series. History repeated itself with Bobbie Chapman and Mark Rooper setting fast enough times to finish 1 and 2 in the overall series results. Chapman's sub 10 minute per mile put quite a gap on the rest of the walkers.

Joni Adams led Kelly McGraw just a mere 34 seconds in the overall series standings going into the last event. It was anyone's race, but Adams' 47:16.85 time bested McGraw for the Overall win. Sammi Harris ripped down the asphalt at a time of 39:33.05 and was the fastest woman on Valentine's Day.

Haden Thomas and Luke Teel had been battling it out; each besting the other in the previous two events. Ten seconds separated the two going into the 10K.

Finally, a strong 38:15.85 finish by Thomas gave him bragging rights going into the summer. Patrick Jividen and Caleb Bowen stayed shoulder-to-shoulder through the race with Jividen out kicking Bownen to the finish with times of 35:59.75 to 36:00.29, respectively.

Another successful Winter Series is in the books. Over 200 runners and walkers participated in the 2009/2010 events organized by the City of Charleston Parks and the Tallman Track Club.

The Charleston Spring/Summer Run and Walk Series is slated to begin sometime in March, but if you just haven't had your fill of races yet this winter, check our schedules and take a look at the local club site at tallmantrackclub.com.

The Tallman Track Club is an unintentionally nonprofit organization dedicated to training and practice for road racing from 5K to Marathon and beyond. New members are welcome and the only membership qualification is a willingness to sweat, suffer, and persevere.

For three decades, the Tallman Track Club has met for practice and training at 5pm at The University of Charleston-heat, cold, rain, sleet or snow notwithstanding.

This series was also presented by Charleston Parks and Recreation.

The Charleston Parks & Recreation Department strives to promote the constructive use of leisure time and thereby the social stability of the community and the physical and mental health of individuals by providing facilities, public areas, open spaces and programs which enhances the quality of life for the citizens of the greater Charleston area.
