According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), an estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed among women in the United States in 2009.

Today, there are about 2.5 million breast cancer survivors living in the United States.

Thousands toed the line between the Kanawha River and State Capitol the first Saturday in May to celebrate those who have survived breast cancer and to raise funds to help those who will fight this disease in the future.

It was an impressive sight. The serious competitors got out front quickly, but then a sea of pink flowed across the starting line towards the South Side Bridge. Shoulder to shoulder this wave of people continued for more than ten minutes.

Participants of every age took part using all sorts of motility. Trolleys and pedicabs took those that prefer not to run or walk. Wagons and strollers moved those who have yet to take thier first steps.

Great weather and a flat course helped Charleston native, Marshall Spradling, post a winning time of 17:25:28.

Almost 33 seconds behind was another local, Maria Busienei, who took first place female and second overall with a time of 17:57:95.

Adam Hill was close behind clocking an 18:06:15 for 2nd place male and 3rd overall.

Second place female was gutted out by Lyndsey Jones of Charleston with a time of 20:56:97.

Many in the crowd were amazed at 11 year-old, Braxton McMillion of Winfield. He smoked the course with a 18:59.42. This certainly will not be the last time we see Braxton.

Eight teams competed for bragging rights. Cross Fit led Firebreather Fitness 2:17:46 to 2:22:55.

Many thanks go out to all of the volunteers. Special thanks to Rebecca Newhouse, race director and Susan G. Komen for the Cure West Virginia Affiliate President, who works so hard to make this event a continued success.
